Help Croydon kick-start 2019 at the London New Year’s Day Parade

9th August 2018
Croydon Mayor Bernadette Khan has invited members of the public to help shape for the borough’s entry into the 2019 London New Year’s Day Parade.

At the heart of the annual parade are displays and performances given by representatives from each London local authority, to showcase the city’s rich diversity. The parade’s theme this year is “London Welcomes the World”.

The Mayor is calling for supporters who might be willing to perform in the parade, or support Croydon’s entry through sponsorship

The entry can take the form of an act, float, performance, dance ensemble, or all the above.  Previous years performances have included a Bollywood routine from Apsara Arts, and stars of the stage from the Croydon Dramatic and Operatic Association.

All borough entries are automatically entered into the Boroughs’ Competition, aiming to win a charity cash prize of £5-£10,000 to support a local good cause.  The Mayor’s chosen charity is Cancer Research UK. All suggestions are welcome to be emailed to the.mayor@croydon.gov.uk by Friday 24 August.

The London New Year’s Day Parade 2019 sets out on Piccadilly, down Lower Regent Street to Trafalgar Square, then along Whitehall to Parliament Street. Previous years have seen as many as 10,000 people take part, performing in front of 650,000 spectators and a worldwide broadcast audience of 600 million.

The Mayor of Croydon Bernadette Khan said: “This is a fantastic opportunity to show off Croydon to not only the rest of the capital, but to the world.  From street art to music, the borough’s reputation for creativity is growing, so I’d like to hear Croydonians’ thoughts on what should go into this year’s New Year’s Day Parade.”
