New Cycle Fest to hit Croydon's streets on May 18th

Thu, 6th Apr, 2017
Croydon is to stage its first cycling festival in May to coincide with the return of the Matrix Fitnesss Grand Prix Tour Series to town for the third successive year.

The Cycle Fest will kick off at 11am with children’s and charity races taking place on the street circuit in central Croydon from noon.

There will also be plenty of cycle-related entertainment throughout the day, including cargo, electric and other bike demonstrations and promotional exhibitions in North End and The Queen's Gardens, free bike checks, performances by dance company Bicycle Ballet and a cycling pianist plus the chance to make your own pedal-powered smoothie. Street food will also be available .

The professional races start from 5.30pm and for the third year running, men’s and women’s teams will be going for gold in two exciting televised competitions which put the action in the streets of Croydon, in front of thousands of spectators who are expected to line the circuit.

The event is being staged by Croydon Council with financial support from Croydon BID and other partners, including construction and property companies, Willmott Dixon and Mulalley.

Councillor Tony Newman, leader of the Council said: The town’s going to take on a party atmosphere for this great festival. It’s guaranteed to be a fantastic day out, regardless of whether you’re a cycle racing enthusiast or not. It’s nationally viewed events like this that help raise Croydon’s profile and encourage even more investment into the borough.

“Thanks to the generous support of our sponsors this year we’re able to deliver a bigger event at less cost to local taxpayers.”

Highlights of the racing will be screened on ITV4 and via ITV Hub, so TV viewers will catch glimpses of the iconic Croydon Clocktower, see riders navigating the tight turn beneath the flyover and sprinting up the High Street to the finish line.

Croydon is the fifth stage of the three week men’s Tour Series, which pits seven top-level teams against one another. A further 13 women’s teams will be competing alongside the men in the women’s Matrix Fitness Grand Prix Series.

The seven professional men’s teams will be headlined by defending champions JLT Condor, and include ONE Pro Cycling, who return to The Tour Series after a year away. 2015 Champions Madison Genesis also return along with Team Raleigh GAC, Bike Channel Canyon, Metaltek Kuota and Series debutants Morvélo Basso.
