Thousands gather to celebrate Croydon PrideFest and ZEE International Mela

On Saturday, PrideFest began with a parade along North End at 11.30am, followed by live music and entertainment from entertainers such as Channel 4 star Asifa Lahore, and singer songwriter Christopher Haul.  PrideFest was bigger and more ambitious this year, with a particular focus on support for members of the transgender community who led the parade from North End to the Park itself.

Croydon PrideFest and ZEE Croydon International Mela - under one week to go!

On the Saturday, PrideFest will begin with a parade along North End from 11.30am, followed by live music and entertainment all afternoon and evening, with a dance tent open until 10pm.

Confirmed acts include Channel 4 star Asifa Lahore, and singer songwriter Christopher Haul.

There’ll be a further day of colour, music and dance on Sunday 15 July, with the second annual ZEE Croydon International Mela from 1-8pm, bringing together international acts, local artists, family fun and the delicious Tastes of Asia food market.

Relax with a refreshing glass of Pimms, courtesy of The Oval Tavern on the High Street and a punnet of strawberries and cream.

Week one coverage starts from 11.30am-9pm Monday to Friday, where members of the public can pick their spot in the sunshine and watch live coverage on the Wimbledon Big Screen. Entrance is free.

Tune in, eat out, step up – and try it: July hits the High Street

Delivered by Croydon BID and Croydon council, Street Live is transforming the High Street area into a hive of activity for all ages until September, offering something a little different for shoppers, diners and passers-by.

There’ll be no need to queue up in SW19 for a sunny spot to watch all the tennis action, when the Wimbledon Tennis Big Screen comes to the High Street. Admission is free, so pull up a deckchair, get comfy on our grass carpet, and enjoy play from 11:30am – 9pm each day until 15 July.

Ludoquist Board Games Café beat competition from four other finalists, who were shortlisted for the ideas they put forward to boost the borough’s night-time offering. The contest was run as part of Croydon’s ongoing regeneration and the Croydon Growth Zone programme.

Since entering the competition, the owners of Ludoquist have managed to successfully launch their concept by opening their café on Croydon High Street.

New exhibition celebrates 150 years since foundation of Croydon School of Art

The free exhibition is on display in the Museum of Croydon Exhibition Gallery until 14 April and celebrates work from many of the artists who had connections with the school, either as students, visiting teachers or lecturers.

The artwork includes Victorian watercolours and oils depicting Croydon in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and graphic prints and abstract paintings from artists such as Richard Allen, John Hoyland and Bridget Riley.

A new Fairfield takes a step closer

The redevelopment of Fairfield Halls into one of London’s leading arts venues has taken a step closer this week.

Fairfield (Croydon) Ltd and the council have agreed to work together on a managed programme that would see the venue close on 15 July 2016 in preparation for a £30m transformation.

The two-year closure will allow for a comprehensive redevelopment of the ageing building into a spectacular arts and cultural centre, and part of a new vibrant cultural and educational quarter at College Green.
