Enjoy an Escape Without Leaving Croydon
Check Out Croydon went to meet Peter Gale, who alongside his brother, David, brought their successful “escape room” concept, Exciting Escapes, to Croydon. With consistent 5* reviews on Tripadvisor, as well as the Traveller’s Choice Award in 3 of their branches, Exciting Escapes in Croydon has rapidly gained a great reputation as a brilliantly entertaining experience.
In Exciting Escapes, Croydon, Peter’s been busy in lockdown, creating a five further “escape rooms” to add to their existing four. As Peter said, the name “escape room” is a little misleading, as some people might think they’re trapped inside it; however, no one is ever actually locked in , and a “games master” keeps a close eye on the room using cameras from a control room, and is always there to help where needed. The word “escape” might better relate to the fact that these adventures are an escape from everyday life. They are a chance to put down the phone, use collaboration and communication to solve puzzles, complete challenges, come together as a team and have fun!
Each room is themed, so it can transport you to a different time and world. Groups are always separated and enter/exit at different times, so this has made it simple and safe for Exciting Escapes to apply social distancing measures. All rooms are also disinfected after each group and kept clean. As the most recent Tripadvisor reviewer said:
“Really good fun, not over-priced like others I have seen and gets everyone together for a laugh. Covid issues dealt with brilliantly and staff really friendly.”
Peter and David Gale started Exciting Escapes in Southampton and, following success there, opened further rooms in Basingstoke, Portsmouth and now Croydon. With Peter’s background in business as a Managing Director of a contact centre, and David’s improving business processes experience at the top of a Brewing Company, they were inspired by the growing trend for escape room experiences abroad, especially in Asia. They saw the potential early and did their research, visiting many escape rooms with their families before setting their first one up. They loved the fact that they had to talk to each other, use their brains and work together as a team. By creating a different environment and eliminating mobile phones, it means families, or corporate teams, or couples, can really be engaged in the experience. Escape rooms are increasingly popular and, in the UK, the number of escape rooms has grown from 100 to approx. 1,200 in only 4 years. Peter and David Gale have now 21 Exciting Escapes escape rooms, and they are still growing.
The Exciting Escapes’ experience is suitable for any person over the age of 10 (10-13 if accompanied by an adult or 14+), and there are different rooms to choose for different sized groups. People with disabilities are also made welcome, as each Escape Room is on one level and there are elevators available.
They offer a 10% discount for NHS cardholders and they are also offering all Check Out Croydon cardholders 10% discount too.
