Croydon’s Christmas Skate raised £2,500 for homeless charity Crisis as we look to support our street population this Christmas.

Croydon Business Improvement District (BID) has, over the past few weeks, been injecting festive cheer into the town centre bringing with it smiles, laughter, glitz, glamour, baubles, theatrics, nutcrackers, prizes and Croydon’s Christmas Skate.

Croydon’s Christmas Skate was in place from Thursday 9th December to Sunday 12th December offering that little bit of festive magic as excitement for the Christmas season builds. Croydon BID were determined to support our street population this Christmas, as we have in previous years, by donating the ticket fee to a nominated charity.

In 2020-2021, a total of 11,018 people were seen rough sleeping in London. This is a 3% increase compared to the total of 10,726 people seen in 2019-2020. From this total 7,531 people were seen rough sleeping for the first time this year, representing 68% of all people seen sleeping rough. This is a 7% increase on the number of new rough sleepers in 2019-2020. Alarmingly, there has been a 94% increase in rough sleeping numbers since 2011-12 (5,678).

Eleanor Scarfe, Facilities & Administrator for Crisis Skylight Croydon Administrator at Crisis said:

“We are currently gearing up for Crisis at Christmas which with your help, Crisis volunteers do their best to ensure that our guests get the best Christmas possible. We will provide guests this year with a place to stay, essential foods and treats, emotional support over the phone and online but perhaps more importantly, we encourage guests to sign up to services where we put together a tailored package of support based on their circumstances, helping take their first steps out of homelessness.

Beyond Christmas, we work year-round to end homelessness for good. All your donations mean we can continue to offer these services and continue to support our members, so thank you for all you do.”

Matthew Sims, Chief Executive at Croydon BID said:

“We have all been faced with such challenges both mentally and physically professionally and personally that our approach to Christmas has been simply about offering some much needed festive fun and enjoyment. Equally, we know only too well the struggles of our street population and deeply admire the work of many of our partners such as Crisis in delivering for their needs.

We can all do our part in supporting those that are homeless. This Christmas Crisis is asking for donations to help them continue delivering the vital support services. You can make a change by donating here: https://www.crisis.org.uk/get-involved/donate-to-crisis-at-christmas/
