Three Croydon schemes shortlisted for London Transport Awards
The teams behind promoting sustainable travel, growth in Croydon’s town centre and pedestrian schemes have all been shortlisted for categories at the prestigious 2019 London Transport Awards.
The projects and categories are:
- Croydon Growth Zone - working with Transport for London and the Greater London Authority, shortlisted for Transport Team/Partnership of the Year
- Transforming the High Street – experimental pedestrianisation, shortlisted for Excellence in Cycling & Walking
- Pedestrianised zone schemes around schools, shortlisted for Most Effective Road Safety, Traffic Management and Enforcement.
The Croydon Growth Zone promotes sustainable growth and development in the town centre. It helps deliver essential infrastructure including transport links to coincide with major developments.
The trial transformation of the High Street has seen the creation of a safe pedestrianised public space for people to enjoy. It has hosted fantastic public events including live music, a series of open air performances, Street Live and a large screen showing Wimbledon in partnership with Croydon BID and Think Events.
Pedestrian zones were created around three schools in Croydon in 2017 in an effort to improve road safety while reducing air pollution and cutting the number of pupils travelling to school by car. The restrictions only operate during the school run.
Councillor Stuart King, cabinet lead for environment and transport, said: “We are working hard every day to make journeys in Croydon safer, quicker and more sustainable and I’m glad these innovative projects have been recognised.
“Each of these schemes has helped transform and improve the lives of our residents and I’m immensely proud of the hard work council staff have put in to makes these initiatives so successful.
“I wish everyone the very best of luck on the evening.”
The London Transport Awards recognise excellence in transport and reward innovation and progress for transport initiatives making a real difference for Londoners.
The winners will be announced at a special ceremony in London on Thursday 7 March.
