Wimbledon Live on the High Street
It will be served from Monday 1 July 2019, and be open for two weeks, every day, from 11am to 9pm, on the High Street in Croydon.
The centrally-located and accessible area, which is free to all to enjoy, gives people a place to enjoy the most prestigious and oldest tennis competition in the world, or simply relax in the sunshine, eating and drinking, with their friends or colleagues.
The previous Wimbledon Live experience was a resounding success. Last year, more than 6,500 enjoyed the space and more than 800 people watched the finals on the last weekend together. These exhilarating finals saw Angelique Kerber smash her way to success against Serena Williams and Novak Djokovic win his fourth Wimbledon title against Kevin Anderson.
Shaun Webster, Head of Operations, says,
“The Wimbledon Live experience transforms the High Street into an attractive area that attracts lots of people of all ages to spend time socialising and watching the Championships. This year, we’ll be able to watch World No. 1 and defending champion Novak Djokovic, who is gunning for his fifth Wimbledon crown, while Roger Federer looks to add to his record eight titles. Czech player, Karolína Plíšková is widely tipped to win the women’s title, but Serena Williams is set for a smashing competition.”
Councillor Oliver Lewis, cabinet member for culture, leisure and sport, said: “I was fortunate enough to be able to get to the High Street and watch some of Wimbledon Live last year – it’s an ace opportunity to relax and watch some of the best in live sport.
“It’s also fantastic to know we are offering the opportunity to watch the England’s Women’s World Cup semi-final on Tuesday – regardless of who they face I’m sure it’s going to be an exciting game – and hopefully we will be seeing the Lionesses in a World Cup final!”
If you have the time, head over, take a seat and enjoy the sport – and don’t forget, there’s going to be plenty of entertainment, including live music, theatre and sporting activities, on High Street as the summer continues – all for free.”
A giant screen, 4m by 2.5m will be set up in the pedestrianised area, within an inviting space, complete with AstroTurf, striped blue deckchairs, comfortable bean bags and, this year, the addition of pretty, white picket fencing. A notice board will list the Order of Play of key games each day.
Wimbledon Live is part of the summer Street Live programme of regular events, which are delivered in partnership by Croydon BID and Croydon Council.
So, come down to the world of the Wimbledon Championships in the heart of Croydon, grab yourself a deckchair or a beanbag, and sit back and enjoy the atmosphere. We look forward to seeing you all there for the finals: Game, set and match!
